I occassionally consult with clients who want to switch divorce lawyers. They want to stop their relationships with their current divorce attorney and hire me. Of course, I'm always interested in having new clients, but I always tell these clients to proceed with caution. It is absolutely the responsible thing to do. Many of the issues they have with their attorney can be resolved by simply having a sit down with the lawyer and explaining where they are and why they have come to the point that they are considering a change. By simply having this sit down meeting with the lawyer many of the problems the clients have with their current divorce lawyers will be resolved. I urge that these clients proceed cautiously because it is expensive changing lawyers. In the event a switch is made, the client will have to pay me to get up to speed in the case. If they stayed with his or her current attorney, then obviously they would not occur that expense. The current attorney is up to speed in the case already. There are some situations where this approach won't work because the divide between the lawyer and the client is too great to repair by having a sit down. In those cases, I am ready, willing, and able to represent clients who want to "divorce" their divorce lawyers.
